Casino War originated from an incredibly simple card game, so simple in fact that it was a firm favourite amongst children. The game was originally played with two players who split one deck of cards between them. The object of the game was to obtain the entire deck of cards. In order to play 'War' each player in turn would turn over his or her top card and the one with the higher card gets to keep their opponents card. If the values on the two cards were the same then it would be time for the players to 'go to war.' When going to war, each player would put three cards face down and one card face up. The player with the higher card face up would win the war and collect all of the cards. This would continue until one player was in possession of the entire deck.
As for the origins of this simple game, legend has it that it was Merlin, the friend of King Arthurs who invented this game. Apparently one day, King Arthur was with his wife Guinevere and his friend Lancelot when it was derived. As Kind Arthur was weary from jousting, his wife suggested they play cards. Arthur wanted a game with a military theme so it could be enjoyed by his knights along with a game thats premise was simple to understand. It was then that Merlin apparently invented this card game of 'War.'
This card games popularity was quick to grow with many people being confined to their houses in the Middle Ages because of the plague. The games popularity was also quick to grow around the world. It was during the second half of the twentieth century that a Las Vegas casino owner decided to capitalize on the popularity of this game. He added the 'Casino' to the name of the game and adjusted the rules slightly so that it could be played for money. Now with the invention of the internet we can enjoy this classic game in the comfort of our living rooms.
