The game begins as you and the dealer are both dealt seven cards. You must make two poker hands from these seven cards. The two hands need to consist of your best five card poker hand and your best two card poker hand. Your best two card hands are paired, Ace Ace being the best pair, King King second best etc. Your best five card hand is ranked according to traditional poker (see above). This is except for the case of a wheel- A 2 3 4 5, is considered an ace high straight, and loses only to an ace king straight or better hand, such as a flush or full house.
It is very important to remember that your five card hand must always be stronger than your two card hand in pai gow poker. Another unique feature of pai gow is the 'the bug.' The bug is a Joker which is a partially wild card. It can only be used as a wild card to act as an ace, complete a straight, a flush or a straight flush. The aim of the game is to win both hands over the dealers two hands. If you only win one then noone wins and this scenario is referred to as 'a push.' If you lose both you are beat but if you win both your a winner!
